Facebook

I have now joined Facebook and acquired many friends.  When I read the statistics for members of Facebook I guess my brain didn't really comprehend the enormity.  Now I see with my own page how the number of friends can multiply!  I can also see the need for vigilance in keeping ones ID safe and especially the risks for young and/ or trusting individuals.  Just because someone you know,  knows another person it may not mean that he/she/ is safe for you to include in your friends.
I'm not really convinced that I need this social network but perhaps when I retire from the library I will have more time to "Facebook".   Meanwhile, I will contine to plod along with the "new" technology.

Delicious

Well, I now have 4 email accounts- Hotmail, Gmail, Yahoo and work.  Pretty amazing for someone who didn't use email other than at work 12 months ago!
I have the delicious account, too but have yet to work out how to put a link here. http://www.delicious.com/gossamerlane ( Did it. With a little help from my friends!)
The idea of tags etc. seems to have merit and if I was researching a topic I may find a use for it.  It is certainly very handy to be able to access the tags from any computer.  A library could have a site on which staff researched topics and advertised so that students, in particular, could have access to good sites without having to wade through the whole web.

RSS and other amusing items

I feel that I am going deeper and deeper into the mire. Now I have a new set of initials to absorb. What the heck is RSS? So I will return to the course notes. Now,the notes say it's Real Simple Syndication - mmmm Love the simple bit, now what to do? News aggregator there's a new catchword! I've found the reader button on my email and added some RSS feeds to it. Now add it to the blog.

Reverting to old tricks - in the garden

During the weekend I began a new section of garden. Many hours and aches later I have planted corn, carrots, tomatoes, beans, melons and strawberries. My grandchildren will love to come and "help" me to plant and pick.
In the middle of the night I remembered that I hadn't put down snail bait so spent some time wandering about in my night atire protecting the seedlings. I would love the weather to stay calm and cool but no doubt the heat and the East wind will come again.
Still I am envisioning bumper crops.

New Tricks

Well, it has been very hard for me to begin this blog.  I have named it "New tricks" in the hope that it will encourage me to learn some new ways.  My general view of a lot of technology is that by the time I am conversant with one, everyone else is on to the next new thing, so perhaps I should wait!  However, as Mel and Mark have put their time and efforts into this training then I should also make an effort.
I would much sooner read a book than read a screen but for those who browse and love their computers I can see that library blogs would be useful to spread the word of ongoing activities and suggested titles.  I do read our CEO's blog each week so that I can keep up with happenings in the community so without realising it I am already a user!
